Learners are mainly lock-stepped in this phase to ensure that they develop strong social and learning skills. Young students are nurtured by the foundation phase Supervisors (teachers) who aim to help each child to find and fully develop their strengths.

In this phase all six learning areas are covered from the core subjects of maths and languages to the sciences, life orientation and arts and culture. Each learner progresses at his or her own rate and receives individualised attention. The learner's learning is controlled and motivated. The school is aimed at assisting learners to master and apply learnt concepts.

The individualised system of learning continues through all phases with specialised subject facilitation. Learners in this phase are also given guidance and counselling.
